Bondage Rope Explained

Rope bondage or rope-play is a very popular bondage practice that involves using rope to restrict movement, suspend, or consensually restrain a partner using bondage rope as part of ones BDSM activities. Bondage rope is an extremely popular piece of bondage gear  for beginners as it allows you to quickly restrain your partner in a large variety of ways. Due to the versatility of rope it is also an extremely popular piece of equipment for more experienced bondage players, especially in those who practice the erotic Japanese bondage art form known as shibari.

What is Shibari?

As mentioned earlier, Shibari is the ancient Japanese art form of consensually binding and restraining your partner. This form of rope bondage is often associated with a fetish, however Shibari is a learned skill, and can be used for mental stimulation as well as relaxation.

Shibari usually consists of the ‘rigger’,the person who is using the rope to restrain their partner who is known as the ‘bunny’ or ‘model’. Shibari was derived form Hojo-jutsu, which is the ancient Japanese way to restrain prisoners. Samarai used to take pride in how they treated their prisoners, and would show their respects by tying them in elaborate and artistic bindings. This then developed into Kinbaku-bi, which means the ‘beauty of tight binding’, which is now known as Shibari.

What are some different bondage rope techniques?

There are many different types and styles that the ‘roper’ can create on the ‘model’ including; high hands behind the back binding, crotch rope tie, shrimp binding, reverse prayer hands, and many more. Below are a few easier techniques that you may want to try with your partner to get started:

Hog Tied – A hog tie is itself a very popular piece of bondage equipment, and allows you to bind your partners arms and legs behind their back. You can easily re-create this with some bondage rope. Start by tying the person’s hands behind their back, with their palms facing each other, leaving just over half the amount of rope left to bind their ankles later. If you would prefer to, you can bind your partners elbows. Once this has been done, lay your partner flat on the ground, making sure they are comfortable. Then gently push your partners feet together and raise them up. Now bind their ankles in a similar way you did their hands with the rest of the bondage rope.

Spread Eagle – A spread eagle tie is essentially the same as an under the bed restraint system. It essentially requires you to tie your partners limbs to each corner of the bed, so can require four pieces of bondage rope, however, depending on the size of your bed you may be able to get away with two. Doing this tie is extremely straight forward. Start by tying the ropes to each corner of the bed, and then bind your partners limbs with the left over rope.

Chair Tied – A chair tie is a way of binding your partner to a chair. Start by sitting your partner in the chair, and then binding their arms behind the subjects back, and through some of the chair. Then tie your partners ankles to the legs of the chair. You can use more ropes to make sure that your partner is completely secured.

What are the benefits of using bondage rope?

Safely practicing different forms on BDSM can bring numerous benefits, especially within a relationship, including increase in trust, as you are allowing your partner to tie you up, giving them the power to have complete control over you.

For couples who are first exploring bondage, rope is one of the most versatile and cost effective types of bondage gear. Some pieces of bondage equipment can be extremely expensive, and you may not want to fork out on such an expensive piece of equipment if you and your partner are unsure if you will enjoy it. So buying a couple of pieces of bondage rope can be a good way for you and your partner to explore bondage before committing to a more expensive piece of bondage gear.

Using bondage rope also demonstrates skill, and as mentioned there are so many different types of ties that people learn. Tying someone up also demonstrates patience, as some of the more complex rope ties can be very time consuming.

What are the different types of bondage rope?

There are many different types of bondage ropes available, at Loving Joy, we like to stock the best, so we have the two most popular types of bondage rope.

Firstly, and by far the most popular material for bondage rope is cotton. Cotton bondage rope is very affordable, very strong, and also washable, which is very important in a lot of bondage toys! Cotton is also a natural fibre, with a decent tooth, allowing you to use it in shibari. Because it is a natural fibre it doesn’t rub against the skin, so is comfortable for the model to wear for a longer session if needs be.

Finally, Hemp Bondage Rope. This is an incredibly strong natural material that has fantastic tooth. Hemp rope is very strong, and usually allows for a heavier load to be carried. Hemp is great for Shibari, and is one of the more popular materials among experts, because it goes very well with the traditional Shibari aesthetic and mantra.
